Head in Water
Work in Progress
Glass-Bowl Solos and Duets, 2025
Head in Water is an open-ended solo practice based on a glass bowl filled with water. Using a hydrophone and a single loudspeaker, I create a feedback circuit that lets me explore the bowl’s resonance, modulating it through movements of water and adjustments of the microphone’s position. Most strikingly, immersing my head and vocalising underwater expands the timbral palette and gives the performance a visceral and symbolic edge that oscillates between ridicule and danger. The piece functions as a mobile laboratory, open to collaboration. Originally developed for a scene in the 2018 opera Love and Other Things (created with Tedd Robinson), it now serves as an ever-evolving instrument.
